The Walking Dead, Book One, by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore (illustrator), Charlie Adlard (illustrator)
 |
Two police officers confront an armed suspect. One of the police officers, Rick, is shot. Later Rick awakens in a hospital bed. His calls for a nurse are ignored, so he goes in search of help only to find every desk empty, every corridor deserted. Finally, behind barred doors, Rick finds a whole new story: a room of sickening slow-moving bodies with no apparent sense of comprehension but threatening all the same... The Walking Dead, Book One is a hardcover collection of the first twelve issues of the graphic novel of the same name. Although it has great similarities to traditional zombie movies, the book really does stand on its own. Rick’s journey in search of his family and other fellow humans through a zombie infested world is full of good character development and powerful illustrations. While the zombies are ever-present, the focus is more about the ongoing building and shattering of relationships in times of hardship. Book Two is now out and on my must-read list.
