Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran

From the seaside palace of Cleopatra VII’s Egypt to the bustling, crowded streets of ancient Rome Cleopatra’s surviving children, twins Cleopatra Selene and Alexander Helios learn that being useful to Octavian and how much of a threat they are to him are determiners of their survival.   As reluctant members of the Julii-Claudii inner circle they witness the machinations as Octavian’s sister competes with his wife to have her son named as heir over Livia’s son, Tiberius.  The incident where the wealthy merchant was going to feed his slave to the eels for breaking the crystal did actually occur.  It was featured in a program on the History Channel.Navigating the politics, ambitions, slave rebellions, and Roman idea of justice the siblings try and find a niche for themselves in a strange world far from their ancestral kingdom.  Beautifully researched and written.
